Description
Louise A. Jackson takes us inside the adventure, hardships, and joys peculiar to the packing trade. Beginning with an overview of the packing business, including descriptions of the workers, the animals, the equipment, and life on the trail, Jackson presents a thorough, engaging history of the industry and its origins, shot through with the packers own anecdotes and observations. Part 1 is an absorbing account of the evolution of the packing trade, from early Spanish explorers and missionaries to gold-rush muleskinners to mid-twentieth-century outfitters. Part 2 discusses in-depth the history of conservation in the Sierra Nevada and the role packers played, including the creation of the Sierra Club, the development of eastern Californias national parks and forests, and the pressures of increasing population and government packing regulations. Part 3 introduces colorful charactersboth human and equineand offers personal stories and evocative descriptions of the backcountry experience, shedding light on why, for the mule men, the packing life was the only kind worth living. More than sixty historical photographs enliven the text. The book also includes maps of trails and pack stations, a glossary of packing terms, and appendixes of historical Sierra pack outfits and campsites.
