John Williams is the biggest name in the history of movie music and, probably, the most widely-heard composer of the last one hundred years. Williams began composing for television in the late 1950s, eventually moving on to feature films later in the 1960s. In 1972 he won an Oscar for his orchestration of the music for Fiddler on the Roof, the first of many big-time awards in his career.
