This is Becca from the Washoe County Library System. Welcome to On the Shelf.

Audiobooks are a fantastic way to enjoy a book while out for a walk or commuting to work. These are a few of my favorite fiction audiobook listens from 2022.

True Biz by Sara Novic is the story of a CODA (child of a deaf adult), named Febuary, who leads a boarding school for the deaf. The book follows her life and that of several deaf students as they navigate their teens. Read the novel alongside the author, who is signing the dialogue of the deaf characters in the background. This makes for a fascinating listen as you hear the added emphasis to the words through American Sign Language.

Young Mungo, by Douglas Stuart, is narrated by Scottish actor Chris Reilly. His second work, Young Mungo, takes place in the same Glasgow community of Sighthill Tenement as his first book. Despite their religious differences, 15-year-old Mungo, a Protestant, falls in love with James, a Catholic, which is unthinkable in their community, at that time. Chris Reilly’s narration will make you not want to stop listening.

Lastly, Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson is beautifully narrated by actors, Lynnette R. Freeman and Simone McIntyre. Black Cake is a saga that spans from the 1960s Caribbean to present day Southern California. This book is currently being developed into a Hulu series, which is being produced by Oprah. Black Cake is a great pick for those who enjoyed The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett or Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
